Geoff's story
Why did you join hmv?
It epitomised everything that I was passionate about – music and film mainly, but also a vibrant work force I could identify with.
What do you enjoy most about working at hmv?
It’s always been about the people. I have some truly great friends who I’ve met working at hmv.
What does your job involve?
Designing and delivering learning and development courses both in our "dog house" training centre and also on-line. I get to meet people from all over the business and feel that my department is respected and listened to whenever a new initiative is being launched in hmv
What opportunities have you had to progress?
Blimey! I've had loads. I started on the shop floor and progressed to Store Manager, from there I went into L&D. I then decided to try my hand at ecommerce and the commercial dept (buying books). After dipping my feet in those worlds I decided I missed L&D and made my way back here. Throughout this time I have been on more courses than I can remember. There really is a wealth of opportunities to develop and progress in hmv, especially through our celebrated Fast Track programme.
What's been your highlight of working for hmv?
Getting to meet Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent of The Zombies (one of my favourite bands of all time)
What / who is your inspiration?
I'd like to say Ian MacKaye of Fugazi or Godspeed You! Black Emperor for their anti-corporate DIY zeal, however as I work for a corporate entity and would sell my own gran for a quick dollar, it seems a bit hypocritical. I guess people who inspire me (and this is going to sound a little tree huggy) are people around me, especially my friends.
